n. m. Poisson téléostéen comestible présent dans tout l'Atlantique tropical, aussi appelé thon à nageoires jaunes.

— ICHTYOL. Poisson de grande taille du genre scombre appelé aussi thon blanc :
• 1. Albacore. Poisson des mers occidentales, baptisé ainsi par les Portugais, à cause de sa blancheur. C'est une bonite gigantesque qui atteint le poids de 30, 40 et même 45 kilos.

• 2. Cette pêche a pris une certaine expansion depuis la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale et porte aujourd'hui sur d'autres espèces, l'albacore (ou thon à nageoires jaunes) et la bonite à ventre rayé.

Étymol. ET HIST. — Ca 1525 ichtyol. (PIGAFETTA, Relation du premier voyage autour du monde par Magellan, éd. J. Denucé, Paris, 1923, p. 73 : En ceste mer occeane on veoit une chace fort plaisante de poissons qui sont de troys sortes, longs d'une brace ou plus et se appellent ces poissons Dorades, Albacores et Boniti).
Empr. à l'hisp.-amér. albacora, attesté dep. 1535 (OVIEDO. Hist. nat. des Indias, éd. 1851, t. 2, p. 56, d'apr. AL. t. 1 1958, s.v.), prob. de l'ar. marocain bakûra, proprement « jeune bonite », de l'ar. « précoce » (voir COR, s.v. albacora II, P. BARBIER, R. lang. rom., 1914, pp. 295-296, BRAULT, Rom. Philol., 1962, p. 131). L'empr. au port. (BOULAN 1934, p. 58) est moins vraisemblable, la forme originelle port. étant albecora, et l'original ital., dont la Relation de 1525 est une trad., étant parsemé de mots esp.
